Membership Grows to 35 Companies in Just One Year
Council Pledges to Strengthen Industry-Academia Collaboration, Member Networking, and Global Expansion

[BioTimes] The Exosome Industry Council, chaired by Bae Shin-gyu, held its 2023 General Meeting on January 31, with representatives from 30 member companies in attendance.

The meeting included an opening declaration, confirmation of quorum, business reports, and an audit report. Members reviewed and approved five agenda items: the 2022 financial settlement, amendments to the articles of association, appointment of directors, appointment of an auditor, and the 2023 business plan and budget.

The Council reappointed its existing leadership, including Chairman Bae Shin-gyu, CEO of MDimune, and Vice Chairman Choi Chul-hee, CEO of ILIAS Biologics, following the completion of their two-year terms. It also appointed Kim Yoon-keun, CEO of MD Healthcare, and Kim Soo, CEO of Brexogen, as new directors.

The Exosome Industry Council was established in 2021 by biotechnology companies developing exosome-based therapeutics, with the aim of advancing exosome technologies, expanding their applications, and fostering industry growth. Since launching with 14 member companies, the Council has expanded to 35 member companies in just one year.

Several member companies have also made notable progress in advancing exosome therapeutics into clinical development. ILIAS Biologics, ExoStemTech, Brexogen, and Primoris Therapeutics, among others, have entered clinical-stage development in Korea, the United States, and Australia.

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles secreted by cells that act as messengers for intercellular signaling and are attracting significant attention as next-generation drug delivery vehicles. Commercialization has already begun in the diagnostic field, where exosomes can serve as disease-specific biomarkers. As their therapeutic potential continues to emerge, the number of companies worldwide developing exosome-based technologies is rapidly increasing, and the related market is expected to experience substantial growth.

Against this backdrop, the Exosome Industry Council is carrying out a range of initiatives to establish a robust industrial ecosystem for exosome developers, support open innovation between domestic and international industry and academia, and build global partnerships and networks in the exosome field.
